I hold a PhD in history from Birkbeck, University of London and an MA in Social Anthropology from Goldsmiths, University of London. I am a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (FRHistS).

I am currently an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at Birkbeck, University of London. I was a Wellcome Trust Fellow in Medical Humanities (2017-24). I held a Birkbeck Wellcome Trust ISSF Career Development Fellowship and was lead researcher on the Wellcome Trust funded Birkbeck Pain Project led by Professor Joanna Bourke. I am on the Steering Committees of the Birkbeck Centre for Medical and Health Humanities and the Birkbeck Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Mental Health.

I founded the Challenging Research Group for scholars from the Humanities and Social Sciences who work on complex and emotionally demanding research with a particular focus on ethics and methodologies.

I regularly peer review articles and books for academic presses, and grant applications. I have taught at undergraduate and post-graduate level, and supervised and examined students at all levels including PhD.
